A massive sinkhole opened up on September 8, 2024, near Nicolas Cage's $10.5 million mansion in Malibu, California, causing significant damage to the area and forcing residents of 31 oceanfront homes to evacuate. The pit measures 25 to 30 feet deep and 30 by 60 feet wide, swallowing the soil beneath the private road and cutting off access for emergency vehicles. As a result, Malibu officials declared a local emergency at 6 p.m. that day, red tagging seven homes due to structural danger and another 24 because of unsafe access for emergency services. Geologists and engineers are now working to shore up the area, protect home foundations, and build temporary coastal erosion protection before eventually filling the crater and rebuilding the road.
