The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) has updated its code of ethics to address racism and discrimination in healthcare. The changes aim to provide clearer guidance on culturally safe, trauma-informed, and equitable care while respecting Indigenous knowledge. These updates are part of the CMA’s reconciliation action plan and now include the code of ethics in four Indigenous languages: Anishinaabemowin, Michif, Northern Michif-Cree, and Inuktitut. Dr. Bolu Ogunyemi, president of the CMA, emphasized that racism and discrimination persist in healthcare with tragic consequences and that this updated code is an important step towards improvement. The CMA has also acknowledged its role in past harms to Indigenous Peoples through practices such as Indian hospitals, forced medical experimentation, forced sterilization, and child apprehensions.
