In early July, one of the new Northlander trains ordered by the Ontario government to restart rail service to northern Ontario crashed into a tow truck near Bracebridge. The train has been out of commission for two-and-a-half months while undergoing repairs. A Ministry of Transportation spokesperson told Global News that repairs are nearly complete and testing is progressing, but did not specify how this incident delayed the launch date. Premier Doug Ford had promised to reopen the Northlander as part of his 2018 election platform; it was originally decommissioned by the Liberals in 2012. The train will run from Toronto’s Union Station to Timmins and Cochrane, aiming to revive rail service for northern communities.
