GB Energy chairman Jürgen Maier initially told MPs that the company could create over 1,000 jobs at its headquarters in the northeast by 2031. However, he later clarified that only around 200-300 jobs would be created there by 2031. The Labour Party's energy and jobs minister, Martin McCluskey, was questioned about this discrepancy on Times Radio but appeared to obfuscate the original promise of 1,000 jobs, claiming it was never intended as direct employment figures.
SNP MSP Jack Middleton criticized the Labour government for not only failing to meet its job creation promises but also for causing a loss of around 1,000 energy jobs monthly due to their tax policies. He accused McCluskey of misleading the public and highlighted that under the current government's tenure, Grangemouth, Scotland’s premier offshore industry site, had been shut down.
Middleton further pointed out that Labour’s policies were increasing household energy bills by around £1,000 more than initially pledged. These criticisms underscore a growing sentiment among Scots that independence could better manage and benefit from their own energy resources.
