Noahkai Banks, a 19-year-old dual-national defender born in Honolulu with ties to both the United States and Germany, has decided to commit to playing for Germany. Born to an American father and German mother, Banks had previously played exclusively for US youth national teams, including at the U-17 World Cup in 2023. However, he was recently named to Germany’s U-21 squad for their upcoming European Championship qualifiers, marking a significant shift in his international football career.
In September 2025, Mauricio Pochettino, manager of the US men's national team (USMNT), called Banks into camp but did not include him on the final roster. Banks also turned down a call-up to the US squad in March before the 2026 World Cup, signaling his preference for Germany.
The decision is a blow to the USMNT’s efforts to recruit top talent ahead of their next generation-focused camps planned for September/October 2025. With Banks committing to Germany, he will need to file a one-time switch with FIFA, effectively ending his eligibility to play for the United States.
