Oxford United, an English football club, apologized after releasing a clothing line with "United 93" printed on shirts, referring mistakenly to their founding year of 1893 rather than being aware it was the call sign of one of the planes hijacked during the September 11 attacks. The shirts were part of their new "Campus Collection," launched around the anniversary of the tragic event. After realizing the historical insensitivity, the club immediately withdrew the collection and issued a statement taking full responsibility for not conducting proper due diligence before releasing it. They apologized sincerely for any offense caused and promised to review their approval processes to prevent similar issues in the future. The affected shirt design was inspired by American sports styles and had been initially delayed out of sensitivity towards the 9/11 anniversary but was released without addressing its problematic symbolism.
