Meritage Hospitality, one of Wendy’s largest franchisees operating 314 restaurants across 15 states, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protections as it struggles to compete against McDonald’s and Burger King. The company attributes its financial difficulties to Wendy’s same-store sales declines over six consecutive quarters, citing that the majority of Meritage’s portfolio operates under the Wendy’s brand. During a June investor conference, Bob Schermer Jr., CEO of Meritage, revealed a 48% drop in store-level earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) due to rising beef prices and increased discounts.
