On September 18, the Russian Ministry of Justice labeled acclaimed filmmaker Andrey Zvyagintsev a "foreign agent" after he criticized Moscow's war in Ukraine. Zvyagintsev, known for films like "The Return," recently won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival for his work on "Minotaur." This film portrays a Russian businessman who must choose which of his employees will be drafted to fight in Ukraine and is widely seen as one of Zvyagintsev's most critical works about Russia's political and moral state. In his acceptance speech, Zvyagintsev called for an end to the massacres and stated that Vladimir Putin alone could stop the war. Russian authorities accused him of spreading false information about government decisions and policies, a move critics see as part of Moscow's crackdown on dissenting voices, especially those with international recognition.
