On Friday, several schools in Oakhurst, California were placed under lockdown due to the sighting of a black bear. The affected institutions included Yosemite High School, Oak Creek Intermediate, and Oakhurst Elementary. Initially spotted near the tennis courts at Yosemite High School, the bear climbed trees before eventually wandering away from campus grounds.
Parents received notifications about the situation before school started, leading to students being kept on buses until it was deemed safe for them to enter the buildings. The Madera County Sheriff’s office coordinated with the US Fish and Wildlife Service to handle the wildlife incident and ensure student safety.
Photographs and video footage showed the bear standing upright on its hind legs and climbing into a tree, prompting immediate action from local authorities. Despite the brief disruption, no injuries were reported during this unusual morning event in Oakhurst.
