A family of four was winched to safety by a rescue helicopter after their yacht hit Elizabeth Reef in the Whitsundays, off the Queensland coast, around 4 am on Saturday. The ten-meter vessel got stuck about 120 kilometers from the mainland. The parents and their two children (aged nine and twelve) stayed aboard until help arrived.
CQ Rescue Helicopters dispatched a crew from Mackay, who performed a complex rescue operation involving a hoisted swimmer to assist with the extraction of each family member. Once safely on board, the helicopter transported them to Whitsunday Airport before transferring the father, who had sustained head injuries, to Proserpine Hospital for further treatment.
CQ Rescue CEO Tim Healee highlighted the intricate nature of rescuing people from a remote reef, emphasizing the need for precision and teamwork during such operations.
