On September 11, in Cametá city of Pará state in northeastern Brazil, a terrifying incident occurred at Dr. Gerson dos Santos State School when a 17-year-old student attacked her teacher, Betânia de Almeida, with a hunting knife after a mathematics exam was graded. The attack was caught on video showing the teen attempting to stab the teacher multiple times; one attempt nearly hit de Almeida's face while she was trying to defend herself and take back the weapon. De Almeida escaped but sustained injuries requiring medical attention at Cametá Regional Hospital, where she received stitches and was discharged by Saturday. The student, who reportedly disliked her teacher, was arrested on the scene according to a report from the Pará Civil Police. According to local lawyer Thays Cruz, despite being arrested, as a minor, the teen will face an infraction similar to attempted homicide under Brazil’s Statute of the Child and Adolescent rather than criminal liability.
