Vanessa Wheyland, a mother of three and CEO of Wheyland Electric, died after being hit by a suspected drunk driver in Escondido, California, near Tamarack Beach on September 15. The incident occurred around 8 p.m. when Fernando Cruz Saldana, driving with a suspended license due to a prior DUI conviction from 2023, struck Wheyland and fled the scene. She was found critically injured in the roadway and pronounced dead at a local hospital. Police used community tips and automated license plate readers to track down Saldana's vehicle about a mile away. Due to his previous offense, prosecutors charged him with second-degree murder under California’s “Watson Murder” doctrine, which holds individuals accountable if they drive while intoxicated after knowing the dangers involved. Saldana appeared in court on September 15 and pleaded not guilty to charges including murder and leaving the scene of a collision.
