On September 18, 2026, ten lions were found dead in the Ndutu area of Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) confirmed on September 19 that preliminary findings suggest poisoning was the cause of death and an investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause and identify those responsible. Since June, at least 20 elephants in Kenya's Amboseli ecosystem, near Tanzania’s border, have also died from suspected pesticide poisoning, though authorities could not confirm whether these deaths were accidental or deliberate. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area has been a site of tension between the local Maasai community and conservation efforts due to population growth encroaching on wildlife habitats; the number of people living there rose from about 8,000 in 1959 to over 100,000.
