On September 17, 2023, Richard Hammond, a former BBC Top Gear presenter, commemorated the 20th anniversary of a severe jet car crash that nearly claimed his life. During filming at Elvington airbase near York in 2006, he was driving a jet-powered Vampire dragster when a front tyre blew, causing him to lose control and crash at over 320mph (515km/h). Despite the severity of his injuries, including being left upside down in the wreckage with serious head trauma, Hammond managed to extricate himself from the vehicle. He credited his survival to the quick actions of emergency responders, particularly members of an Air Ambulance team and other medical staff who treated him after the crash. In social media posts marking this anniversary, Hammond expressed deep gratitude towards those who saved his life, noting that he had accepted death as imminent during the accident but is now "forever grateful" to the many individuals involved in rescuing and treating him.
