Transport for London (TfL) has increased tolls on the Silvertown and Blackwall tunnels in London, effective from an unspecified date. The new charges are £5.25 off-peak and £10.50 at peak times for heavy goods vehicles, up 5% each way. Large vans now face a peak charge of £6.80 and off-peak charge of £2.60, reflecting increases of 30p and 10p respectively.
TfL attributes the rise to managing traffic demand, aiming to enhance road network performance, encourage public transport usage, and support economic growth. Christina Calderato, Director of Strategy at TfL, emphasized that without these charges, there would be more congestion with detrimental effects on air quality and journey times. A previous TfL report noted significant decreases in pollution and travel time around the Blackwall Tunnel since its opening, although weekday journeys through Rotherhithe Tunnel had increased by 3%.
