Columbia University locked down parts of its Morningside Heights campus in New York City, restricting access to local residents including seniors. This move came after protests and an encampment where students allied with outside agitators occupied university buildings. The university called in the NYPD to restore order during these disturbances, which some view as a failure by Columbia's leadership to handle the situation effectively internally.
The campus closure also impacted College Walk, a stretch of 116th Street that has been publicly accessible since at least 1953. This decision forced nearby residents to take longer detours, particularly inconveniencing elderly and disabled individuals who need easier access to essential services near the university.
