An evening vigil is being held on September 7 in Longueuil to mark one year since 15-year-old Nooran Rezayi was shot and killed by a local police officer. The incident occurred after police responded to a 911 call about allegedly armed youths; however, the watchdog later revealed that the only firearm recovered belonged to the officer who shot Rezayi. Quebec prosecutors received an investigation report from the watchdog in March, determining whether charges should be laid against the officer. Six members of Rezayi’s family have filed a civil lawsuit for $2.2 million against the City of Longueuil and its police force, while Montreal police charged 11 young people but later stayed the charges due to new evidence raising complex legal issues. The vigil will begin at 6 p.m. outside a Longueuil police station before moving to the intersection where Rezayi was killed.
