On September 21, 2026, Darryl Arnette Barnes, a 60-year-old maintenance worker at the Progressive Home for the Elderly in South Los Angeles, opened fire on his colleagues with a handgun during a shift. Security camera footage shows Barnes firing shots inside the facility's lobby shortly before 11 a.m., following which one person attempted to flee by diving over a counter.
Three staff members were injured and hospitalized; one was critically wounded while two others sustained stable injuries. All victims, including Barnes, worked at the senior living facility. Police arrested Barnes without incident during an extensive search of the six-floor building where about 100 residents live. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that the shooting occurred in the lobby area and noted it may have been prevented from escalating further due to swift police response.
