Transcona city councillor Russ Wyatt has announced he will run for re-election despite facing two sexual assault charges since March. Although Wyatt denies these allegations and has not been convicted, earlier this year he was removed from his roles on council committees but continues to hold his seat in Transcona because Winnipeg’s Charter allows councillors charged with crimes to remain in office until conviction. In a statement, Wyatt emphasized the need for an independent voice at City Hall and claimed that powerful interests want him gone due to his opposition stance. The candidate registration deadline was Tuesday; Wyatt filed his paperwork Monday afternoon though it hasn't appeared on the city's website yet. Other confirmed candidates include Shawn Nason, Transcona’s former councillor, and Chris Giesbrecht.
