In April, shots were fired at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner (WHCA Dinner) in Washington, D.C., prompting an immediate evacuation. Former White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt revealed that President Donald Trump was eager to return to the ballroom despite the incident, comparing him to a "caged lion" backstage who wanted to resume the event immediately. The gunman, Cole Allen of Torrance, Calif., was quickly apprehended by Secret Service agents and had written in a manifesto targeting Trump administration officials except for FBI Director Kash Patel. Guests at the gala initially dived under tables as the room emptied out following the alleged assassination attempt.
