In July, Chinese state television aired footage of a Type 052D destroyer launching a YJ-20 hypersonic anti-ship missile, signaling an expansion in the Chinese navy's long-range strike capabilities. Previously, the YJ-20 had been associated with larger Type 055 destroyers. However, the Type 052D class has been built in far greater numbers by the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLA Navy), suggesting Beijing can now deploy this advanced missile on a wider range of vessels.
If conflict were to break out over Taiwan, these developments would significantly enhance China's ability to threaten U.S. and allied naval forces approaching from the western Pacific. The Type 052D class is crucial as it allows for broader deployment of long-range missiles across multiple ships, potentially shifting strategic balance in the region against opposing navies.
