St. Cloud State University, located an hour northwest of Minneapolis, has seen significant decline in student enrollment over the past decade. In 2010, the university enrolled 18,000 students; however, by 2024, this number had dropped to just 10,000. Financially struggling, the school reported a loss of $18 million in 2023 and cut more than 40 degree programs the following year. Additionally, the university discontinued its football program in 2019. Despite these challenges, the interim president told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that the institution had not reduced its staffing levels as enrollment decreased over the past ten years.
