Story summary

On September 21, 2026, renowned jazz trumpeter Dr. Jesse McGuire returned to play "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Chase Field in Phoenix for the Arizona Diamondbacks, commemorating 25 years since their last World Series victory in 2001. During his performance, McGuire's trumpet malfunctioned mid-song, but he quickly switched to singing the anthem instead of using a backup instrument, earning a standing ovation from the crowd and praise from Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo for his patriotic display and quick thinking. Known as the team's good-luck charm since 1989, McGuire also plays at Phoenix Suns games and was awarded his own World Series ring by the Diamondbacks in recognition of his contributions during their championship run.
