Mark Wood, a fast bowler for England who was one of the fastest players in his generation, retired from international cricket on Tuesday due to persistent injuries. The 36-year-old Durham native had been out of action for 15 months before returning briefly during the Ashes Test series in Perth in November but was forced to leave after just 11 overs due to a recurring left knee injury. Wood, who joined England's team in 2014 and played in four Ashes series including taking the crucial wicket that won back the urn at Trent Bridge in 2015, cited medical advice that Test cricket and 50-over formats are no longer feasible for him. He took 119 wickets across 38 Tests, contributing significantly to England's victory over Australia in the 2019 World Cup and the T20 World Cup win in 2022, despite his injuries often casting doubt on his availability.
