An elderly man named John Hanson, aged 84, returned to the Concord Public Library in New Hampshire a magazine that he had kept for decades: the September 1894 issue of "The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine." The magazine was checked out more than 130 years ago and would have incurred late fees totaling $12,055 if not for the library's recent decision to freeze fines. Hanson decided to return the magazine after seeing a news article about the fine-freeze policy in the Concord Monitor, which prompted him to bring it back without penalty. The unusual return surprised library staff and highlighted the surprising longevity of overdue materials.
