The federal government launched a $1.5-billion program in 2024 to preserve affordable rental housing under the initiative "Build Canada Homes." This new fund, called the Canada Rental Protection Fund, aims to protect at-risk properties from private buyers who might raise rents or redevelop them. Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Gregor Robertson announced that the Canadian Housing Acquisition Fund (CHAF) will operate this program, which includes partnerships with organizations like the Canadian Housing Renewal Association (CHRA), The National Indigenous Collaborative Housing Inc. (NICHI), Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada, and the BC Rental Protection Fund. The initiative is part of broader efforts to increase affordable housing options for Canadians across the country.
