Jean Kaseya, Director-General of the Africa Centres for Disease Control, called on African countries to start manufacturing vaccines locally during a recent event in Uganda. The urgent call came amid the ongoing Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak, which has affected economies in Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Rwanda, and Burundi. Since the outbreak began, there have been 6,778 confirmed cases and 3,269 deaths according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Although WHO announced an end to Uganda’s outbreak in late August, transmission is still active in the DRC. Kaseya noted that despite discovering the Bundibugyo virus strain nearly two decades ago, no specific vaccine has been developed yet. He pointed out that if such a discovery had occurred elsewhere, like the U.S. or Europe, a vaccine might already exist by now. A vaccine for the Zaire Ebola strain is currently in Phase 3 trials to determine its efficacy against Bundibugyo and results are expected later this year.
