A nine-year-old boy died after drowning in a drainpipe at the Katherine Low Level Nature Reserve in the Northern Territory on Tuesday evening. Police received reports around 5:15 pm that he had entered the drain and did not resurface. Despite a search by divers, his body was found early Wednesday morning at 1:45 am. NT Police Commander Neil Hayes stated it was an "incredibly tragic incident" and noted that welfare support is being provided to the boy's family and attending members. An investigation has been launched with a report prepared for the coroner. This tragedy follows another case in 2014 when an eight-year-old boy drowned while playing in a drainpipe in Palmerston, leading to recommendations for regular inspections of drains.
