On Wednesday night, the Miami Marlins prevented the Chicago Cubs from clinching a playoff spot for the second consecutive day with a 3-2 victory at Wrigley Field. The Cubs needed either a win or an Arizona loss to Colorado to secure their NL wild-card berth but were defeated despite Dansby Swanson's efforts, driving in both of Chicago’s runs. Kyle Stowers hit a two-run homer off Kevin Gausman in the sixth inning for Miami, breaking the scoreless tie. Joe Mack’s groundout brought home Augustin Ramirez with the go-ahead run in the seventh. The Marlins then retired the next nine batters to secure their win. Sandy Alcantara pitched the ninth inning for his second save of the season. Ryan Rolison took the loss for Chicago while Cade Gibson earned the win for Miami, who had won two straight games after losing three in San Diego.
