For the first time ever, European match officials will officiate at the 2027 Asian Cup, which is set to take place from January 7 to February 5 in Saudi Arabia. This historic decision was announced as part of an exchange agreement between UEFA and AFC (Asian Football Confederation) for the upcoming Euro 2028 tournament. The agreement allows referees, like Donatas Rumšas from Lithuania, along with two assistant officials also from Lithuania and video review official Aleandro Di Paolo from Italy, to participate in the Asian Cup.
In return, match officials from AFC will be invited to officiate at Euro 2028, which is co-hosted by England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. This collaboration between UEFA and AFC emerges against a backdrop of increasing tension within FIFA, following its president Gianni Infantino's controversial proposal to sell shares in future World Cup profits to private investors. The cooperation underscores the growing unity among soccer governing bodies amidst global political challenges facing the sport.
