Canadian prosecutors dropped charges against Amit Jalota and Ali Raza, who were accused of involvement in a massive gold theft from Toronto Pearson Airport in April 2023. Over 6,500 gold bars worth C$20 million ($14.5 million/£11.6 million) along with millions in cash were stolen during the heist, making it the largest gold theft in Canada's history. Both men had maintained their innocence and faced significant personal and professional challenges due to the charges against them. Jalota’s lawyer argued that his client was “punitively and unreasonably punished” over the past three years as a result of the public scrutiny and legal proceedings. The heist occurred inside a cargo facility at the airport, and while two individuals have been cleared, others will face separate trials later this year on conspiracy charges related to the theft.
