On September 16, Low Tuck Kwong and his daughter Elaine Low, major shareholders of Bayan Resources (Indonesia’s third-largest coal producer), agreed to sell a 30 percent stake in their company to tycoon Andi Syamsuddin Arsyad, also known as Haji Isam. This transaction occurred amid uncertainty over the approval of additional production quotas for three of Bayan's subsidiaries from Indonesia’s government. The deal led to speculation that it might be connected to the quota delays, although the government denied this claim. Prior to the announcement of the stake sale, Bayan Resources' stock dropped significantly; however, following news of the deal, its shares increased by approximately 20 percent and hit the upper auto-reject limit due to high demand.
