In Inverness, Florida, Citrus County Sheriff’s Office initially responded to reports of an armed robbery at a liquor store. The owner, Renee Bedford, reported that a Black man in a Michael Myers Halloween mask had entered her store and demanded money with a gun. However, after reviewing CCTV footage, the police found inconsistencies in Bedford's account; the video showed a white man committing the crime, not a Black individual as originally claimed by Bedford, who was also seen laughing during the incident.
Richard Lassiter, identified through a Crime Stoppers tip, is now suspected of being involved in staging the robbery alongside Bedford. The sheriff’s office asserts that this case highlights the importance of thorough investigative work and challenges assumptions made based on initial reports. Captain Mat Baird emphasized that despite the mask obscuring identity, other evidence revealed the truth behind the staged crime.
