In January, Brendan Shanahan, a former NHL player and current president of the Toronto Maple Leafs, was tasked by Hockey Canada to review men’s junior hockey in Ontario. After conducting over 50 interviews and surveying 700 people, he released a report with 11 recommendations on Friday. Key suggestions include creating an executive role within Hockey Canada to oversee Ontario's junior hockey, separating governance from delivery of minor and junior leagues, establishing an advisory committee for potential rule changes, allowing players aged 16 and 17 to register across the province without geographic restrictions, adopting consistent playing rules aligned with the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), and improving communication between junior hockey and universities. Shanahan stated he is hopeful these recommendations will make junior hockey in Ontario more athlete-focused and navigable for players and families. The report aims to address changes in NCAA eligibility that have affected the landscape of junior hockey, offering new opportunities for players aged 19 and 20.
