Filipino domestic helpers in Hong Kong are pursuing their educational dreams after years of putting personal ambitions on hold for their families. With support from the non-profit FullPhils, these workers, like Dyan Agonoy and Gelanie Aguilario, are now able to earn degrees while continuing to work as domestic helpers. Agonoy left her university studies in the Philippines when she married young and started a family, finding it necessary to take up domestic work abroad due to the lack of job opportunities without a degree. Similarly, Aguilario attempted twice to complete her bachelor’s degree but was unable to do so because of pregnancy and family obligations. Their stories highlight how these workers are now seizing the opportunity to further their education with the support of FullPhils.
