A woman was bitten by a possibly rabid coyote on a hiking trail in Hastings, Westchester County on Wednesday. The incident occurred along the Old Croton Aqueduct path near Warburton Avenue, inside the Old Croton Aqueduct State Historic Park. Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler warned residents to be vigilant and advised anyone spotting the coyote to avoid approaching it and instead contact police immediately. The victim is receiving emergency preventative rabies treatment.
Officials are searching for the aggressive animal, with authorities from Hastings and Dobbs Ferry, along with Greenburgh animal control officers and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Police involved in the search effort. Rabid animals typically exhibit erratic behavior such as unprovoked aggression or extreme lethargy, signs that can indicate rabies infection.
