Meals on Wheels Jersey, a service providing hot meals to 100 islanders who cannot prepare their own food, faces challenges in recruiting new volunteers due to rising fuel costs. The organization received £38,000 from the Jersey Community Foundation but struggles with attracting new drivers willing to cover their own fuel expenses. Maureen Bougeard, secretary of Meals on Wheels Jersey, noted that existing volunteers often drive across the entire island twice a day and are mostly retired individuals managing on limited pensions or basic state benefits. Despite these challenges, Bougeard praised the commitment of current volunteers who continue to contribute despite financial hardships.
