A Heather Gray encountered a aggressive sea lion while paddle-boarding off the coast of Santa Cruz, California, near Privates Beach on Monday morning. The incident occurred around 8 AM as she was between Capitola Wharf and Pleasure Point. In the attack, Gray was bitten multiple times on her arm, hand, and feet, and had to fight off the sea lion which also grabbed her hair, causing her to fall into the water. Surfline captured video footage of the encounter.
Gray received urgent care treatment, including tetanus and rabies shots due to the bites. She speculated that the sea lion might be sick from domoic acid poisoning, a condition affecting marine mammals in Monterey Bay this year. The Marine Mammal Center had previously advised people to stay at least 150 feet away from affected animals.
