A nor'easter recently uncovered remnants of a 19th-century shipwreck on the south shore of Nantucket Island in Massachusetts. Jason Graziadei, editor-in-chief of the Nantucket Current, spotted wooden beams and iron fastenings likely from the Warren Sawyer, a three-masted schooner that sank near Miacomet Beach on December 22, 1884 while traveling from New Orleans to Boston. The ship was carrying 1,115 bales of cotton and 28 tons of scrap metal when it ran aground due to gale-force winds. Researchers believe these recent findings are part of the same wreck that reappeared in December 2022 and February 2023. The Egan Maritime Institute plans to investigate the site further, aiming to confirm its identity with state underwater archaeologists.
