The Aporia · Chuck Grassley, oldest sitting senator, laments dying in office under a Dem governor

Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley, aged 93 and the oldest sitting senator, expressed concern during the GOP's annual Reagan Dinner that if he were to die in office before January 3, 2029, a Democratic governor could appoint his successor. He emphasized, "I don’t want a Democrat governor choosing my successor." Chuck Grassley, the oldest sitting U.S. senator at 93 years old, expressed concern during the GOP's annual Reagan Dinner in West Des Moines on Friday that a potential Democratic governor could appoint his successor if he were to die before completing his term, which ends January 3, 2029. Grassley stressed, "I don’t want a Democrat governor choosing my successor," highlighting his worry over the upcoming gubernatorial election this fall. If Grassley dies in office within the next two years, the newly elected or incumbent Iowa governor would make an interim appointment to serve until the 2028 general election.
