In August, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed two measles-related deaths from 3,659 cases reported in 2021, marking a 35-year high. The CDC did not specify which states experienced these fatalities but noted that Pennsylvania had over 900 cases, the most affected state. Measles was declared eliminated in the US in 2000; however, it has seen a resurgence due to rising vaccine hesitancy. This resurgence comes amid criticisms of President Donald Trump's administration for promoting debunked claims linking vaccines to autism. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro reported four measles-related deaths, which Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr. disputed, stating only one was directly caused by measles. The CDC has also faced significant staffing challenges with nearly 30% of its workforce lost.
