Hope Air, founded in 1986, provides free medical flights for Canadians who are low-income or living far from healthcare facilities. Since its inception, it has arranged over 277,000 flights through both commercial airlines and volunteer pilots using their own planes. In 2025 alone, Hope Air supported 38,392 travel arrangements, including 14,433 flights for patients from 710 communities across Canada. The charity reports that one in three patients would cancel or delay medical care without its assistance.
To fund these efforts, Hope Air organizes events like Haul for Hope, a fundraising competition where teams pull aircraft at airports nationwide each September. On Monday, the Edmonton International Airport hosted such an event, featuring a team pulling a 67,000 lb WestJet Dash 8 plane over 100 metres on the runway to raise funds and awareness for the charity's cause.
