The Restore Roosevelt Avenue Coalition, a neighborhood activist group in Queens, sent a letter to DHS on Monday, highlighting concerns about counterfeit passports, green cards, and Social Security cards being sold along Roosevelt Avenue, known as the “Market of Sweethearts.” Former state senator Hiram Monserrate, who leads the coalition, warned that these fake documents can facilitate crimes, help individuals evade law enforcement, and threaten national security. The area has seen increased crime, including two stabbings within two weeks, one resulting in a murder. Monserrate also noted the presence of gangs and cartels trafficking women and drugs in the neighborhood.
