Boeing was awarded a US$20 billion contract by the Pentagon on September 29, 2023, to develop and produce the next-generation stealth fighter for the US Navy. This decision follows months of delays due to engineering and supply-chain issues, with some Pentagon officials initially advocating for up to a three-year delay before Congress intervened, approving an additional US$750 million in funding for 2025 and US$1.4 billion for fiscal year 2026. The contract marks Boeing’s second consecutive major win on fighter jets after securing the Air Force’s F-47 project earlier in 2025. Northrop Grumman was also a finalist, but ultimately lost to Boeing, which has a long history of building carrier-based fighters for the Navy, including the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. The new jets are expected to replace the Super Hornets beginning in the early 2030s and could potentially grow into a program worth hundreds of billions of dollars as international orders come in.
