On September 29, 1996, the century-old rope-ferry service that connected Lantau Island with Tai O in Hong Kong ceased operations after serving residents for a hundred years. The ferry was the sole method of crossing the narrow 15-metre creek in Tai O until the completion of a new pedestrian bridge. This $15 million bridge, which began service on that day, provided free passage across the waterway, ending the need to pay 50 cents per trip for ferry rides. The rope-guided ferry had been an integral part of local life in Tai O since its inception and marked a significant change as it was replaced by modern infrastructure.
