NASCAR recently handed down significant penalties to those involved in an attack on two-time Cup Series winner Corey Heim at Martinsville. The incident occurred near a hot dog shack last weekend during a late model race, not part of the more prominent ARCA, Truck, or Cup series. Chad Bryant, team owner and main instigator, was suspended indefinitely from all NASCAR events and fined $2,000; he must also attend anger management sessions approved by NASCAR. Steve Civatarese received an identical suspension but a smaller fine of $1,000. Five other crew members were each fined $500 and put on probation for the year.
Denny Hamlin, considered the unofficial spokesperson for the Cup Series garage, criticized these punishments as insufficiently harsh in his podcast "Actions Detrimental," arguing that such a severe incident warranted more substantial penalties given it happened during a lower-tier race.
