Lindian Resources has flicked the switch on grid power at its massive Kangankunde rare earths project in Malawi, hitting a critical milestone two weeks ahead of schedule and about 20 per cent under budget in a major de-risking event for the aspiring producer.

Kangankunde’s sheer scale has captured global attention, with the project considered one of Africa’s most significant rare earths deposits, hosting a massive 261-million-tonne resource grading 2.19 per cent total rare earth oxides (TREO).

Within that inventory sits a high-grade core of 26 million tonnes at an impressive 3.7 per cent TREO, earmarked as the initial feed for the Stage-one plant.

The new 27-kilometre, 33-kilovolt power line has been connected to Malawi’s national network and the broader Southern African Power Pool, securing a reliable power source well ahead of the planned process plant commissioning in late November.

The company has also stockpiled 125,000 tonnes of ore on the run-of-mine (ROM) pad to ensure a smooth transition to production.

The latest development comes as the geopolitical value of new, non-Chinese rare earths projects continues to climb.

Rare earths remain one of the mining sector’s most strategic themes in 2026, with Chinese export controls and fresh US funding for alternative supply chains keeping new projects firmly in focus.

With power now flowing from the Chingeni substation, Lindian has ticked off a fundamental requirement for any processing operation.

The company says that with water infrastructure also secured, the two essential pillars for Stage-one operations are now firmly in place.

Notably, the power system has been designed with significant headroom and redundancy.

While the plant’s stage one demand is just under three megavolt-amperes (MVA), Lindian has installed two, four MVA transformers.

Lindian → instal → transformers
This allows one to operate as the duty unit while the second provides standby capacity, pointing to a well-thought-out plan for operational continuity.

second → allow → continuity
The company says design optimisation in the transformer yard has also generated US$80,000 (A$115,000) in savings.

Importantly, Lindian’s power strategy does not rely solely on the grid.

strategy → rely → grid
It has also installed a significant solar power component for its non-process infrastructure.

It → instal → infrastructure
A total of 360 kilowatts (kW) of solar generation with battery backup is already operational, powering the accommodation camp, administration offices and clinic.
asserted
total → power → camp
A further 160kW is scheduled for installation by mid-November to support the heavy machinery workshop, the emulsion farm and process-water boreholes.
asserted
160kW → schedule → workshop
Once complete, the company will have 520kW of dedicated solar capacity on site, allowing grid power to be directed principally towards its power-hungry processing requirements.

Lindian Resources executive director Zac Komur said: “At a fundamental level, a processing plant needs two things before it can operate: reliable power and reliable water.

The power line has been delivered ahead of schedule, the power programme is tracking below budget, and the remaining work is focused on completing the plant and moving methodically through commissioning.

The project is already delivering a major economic boost to Malawi, underscored by a recent site visit from the country’s mining minister, who expressed strong support.

Kangankunde’s social licence has also been reinforced, with locals making up more than 85 per cent of Lindian’s direct workforce.
asserted
locals → reinforce → workforce
At the same time, site activity has swelled the broader construction workforce to more than 3000 people, meaning the overwhelming majority of workers are Malawian nationals.

While Kangankunde remains the company’s flagship project, its progress in Malawi is part of a bigger as Lindian builds an integrated, multi-jurisdictional critical minerals business, with its SARECO mixed rare earth carbonate facility in Kazakhstan providing a downstream pathway to capture more value from its Malawian concentrate.

Lindian has also cleverly locked in a partnership with French processing expert Carester to develop an oxide separation facility in Kazakhstan, alongside a binding offtake agreement for its future high-value heavy rare earth products.

This, combined with its portfolio of bauxite assets in Guinea and Tanzania, positions the company as an increasingly diversified international player with operations spanning multiple commodities and jurisdictions.

With the project fully funded for stage one development and two of the biggest infrastructure hurdles now cleared, Lindian appears to be clearing the path towards production.
