Hydro-Québec has proposed a new electricity rate for data centers requiring over five megawatts of power to the Régie de l’énergie, Quebec’s provincial energy regulator. The proposal would nearly double current rates, from around 6 cents per kilowatt hour to an average of 13 cents per kWh, affecting large companies like Google GOOGL-Q. A public hearing in Montreal scheduled until Oct. 9 will discuss the implications of this rate increase. Hydro-Québec argues that higher prices for data centers could prevent residential energy rates from rising due to increased demand. The tech industry, however, is against the proposal, with concerns raised by organizations like the Canadian Federation of Independent Business and energy analyst Jean-François Blain noting Quebec’s current low costs compared to other regions.
