Alex Eala, a 21-year-old Filipino tennis player and Southeast Asia's first WTA title winner, lost her Asian Games semifinal match to China’s Wang Xiyu on Thursday in Nagoya. Ranked 85th globally, Wang won the match 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, ending Eala’s hopes for a gold medal and qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Despite this setback, Eala was undeterred, stating she had no regrets about competing for her country. She gave up an opportunity to earn ranking points and prize money at the concurrent China Open in Beijing to represent the Philippines, potentially facing penalties from the WTA for skipping a mandatory event. This marks Eala’s second singles bronze medal and third medal overall, including mixed doubles bronze from Hangzhou three years ago.
