US Vice President JD Vance has criticized the H-1B visa program, calling it “completely broken,” and suggested scrapping it. In a video posted on X, he accused companies of using the program to replace American workers with lower-paid foreign employees. Specifically, Vance noted that hiring foreign accountants making $45,000 to replace American accountants earning $60,000 is not justified under the H-1B visa system and undermines American employment opportunities.
Vance also defended the Trump administration’s introduction of a $100,000 fee for certain H-1B petitions involving workers outside the US, which was intended to discourage companies from exploiting the program to hire cheaper foreign labor. The measure was extended in September 2026.
